A powerful and impressive cello by the French luthier Leo Spiga. Leo was the assistant of the master violin maker Robert Brewer Young for a long time where he honed his craft and got much of his inspiration. He now creates instruments using his own personal models, which reflect the thought he puts into each of his creations. This cello is fantastic value at its price range. A must try!
Leo Goujard Spiga discovered the art of violin making when he visited a luthier’s workshop in Spain at the age of 16. He devoted all of his time from that point on to the violin and moved to Cremona, where he trained at the Antonio Stradivari international school.
Having learned the fundamental principles of Italian violinmaking, he continued his training with recognized masters all around Europe. For eight years he has worked alongside Robert Brewer Young, in France, making instruments that are currently played by established professionals and soloists.
Leo Goujard has a particular affinity for the Neapolitan school, and regularly works in Italy, in the living tradition of the Gagliano family, using the finest examples of their work as a point of departure for his own. The grace, individuality and power of this southern Italian tradition can be seen and heard in the violins, violas and cellos he creates with passion in his workshop in the French Pyrenees and Italy.
Scotland-based Douglas MacArthur consistently crafts some of the most beautiful instruments we come across. This Ruggeri-model cello is a great example of his expert antiquing and aesthetic balance, and it sounds as good as it looks! The tone is rich & warm, and the instrument feels alive across the range. Douglas is quickly gaining popularity amongst players and collectors in the UK, and this cello is an opportunity to own a very fine example of his work!
I am continually working with musicians to develop the tone and playability of my instruments, travelling, sometimes hundreds of miles, to study the master works of Stradivari, Guarneri etc, as well as those of my contemporaries, and putting the time aside to study in depth all aspects of my craft.
We are very pleased to be working with Belgium-based luthier Erik Buys, presenting an excellent cello from 2023. This cello has a warm tone with lots of resonance and great playability. Erik's instruments are quite popular in London and this one is sure to please!
